Bayonne Nursery School

Intent, Implementation and Impact

At Bayonne Nursery School, our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive. It aims to develop the children’s knowledge skills and understanding. They are inquisitive, curious and independent learners. We want our children to be confident in their abilities and capabilities so that they become successful in their academic career and beyond. Our children are immersed in the seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and language development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world and
  • Expressive arts and design.

We achieve this through ‘In the Moment Planning’, which allows the child to take the lead in their own learning through the things that they are interested in. In turn, adults skilfully build on the children’s interests. They skilfully interact, model and create challenging opportunities, through open-ended questioning, thus creating an environment where children feel happy and secure to become independent learners.

At Bayonne Nursery School, we encourage children to demonstrate their attitudes and behaviours to learning through the Characteristics of Effective Learning.

Our curriculum is designed to recognise the children’s prior learning. This is achieved by providing first-hand learning experiences and allowing the children to develop interpersonal skills. In addition, they build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers to enable them to challenge themselves.  We ensure the content of the curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners and is taught in a logical progression so that children build on prior learning.

We understand the importance of maintaining high standards of teaching, therefore leaders invest in staff CPD, ensuring it is of a high quality and matches the needs of the staff and the children.

We support children’s development by providing a rich language environment, where conversations, singing and sharing stories become an integral part of the children’s day.

We have a particular love for outdoor learning and the children will have the chance to experience Forest School during their time at nursery. They will explore the natural environment at Wimbledon Common.

The broad and balanced curriculum design ensures that the needs of individual children, including disadvantaged, SEND and EAL, are met. High quality teaching includes targeted interventions. It is evident that teaching and learning impacts children’s learning in a positive way. We measure the percentage of pupils achieving age-related expectations termly and at the end of nursery. Despite their starting points, our aim is to ensure that all the children are prepared for the next stage of their education in primary school.

The impact of our curriculum will also be measured by how effectively it develops pupils into well-rounded individuals. We aspire for each child to embody our values and carry with them the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will make them lifelong learners and valuable future citizens.
